The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 1 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
Lofthouse Lions 8 Flanagan’s Army 6
Non-winners:
Kippax Legionnaires 8 Olde Tavern Allsorts 6 Olde Taverners 4
COMMENTS:
After the darts player nicknames last season, we had a round on nicknames of teams competing in the Rugby Union World Cup, and it seemed to go down equally badly…
Flanagan’s Army: Full round on sporting nicknames again!! Olde Taverners: First half quite unbalanced and another round on sporting nicknames which are not popular. [Without doing a full analysis, I can confirm that the balance was a little suspect in the first half of Division One’s quiz: in the three matches, rounds 1, 2 and 4 produced a total of 7 unanswered questions for ‘B’ but only 3 for ‘A’, and the Olde Taverners were ‘B’ in the first half.]
Olde Tavern Allsorts: Rugby nicknames uncomfortably like the darts nicknames last season, but at least we could guess this time.
Carleton Grangers: Rugby team nicknames! Really!!
Featherstone Phoenix: Good mix of questions.
Lofthouse Lions: Tough in places.
Perhaps bearing out the above comment, there were three answers not got by anyone in the FTQL on the night (all asked in Division One’s quiz only, two being B4s and one being an A4): Julian The Apostate (nephew of Emperor Constantine) Bobby Womack (wrote “It’s All Over Now”) Hibiscus (from Greek for ‘marshmallow’) Neil.

The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 2 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
Carleton Grangers 8
Kippax British Legion 8
Lofthouse Lions 8
Olde Tavern Allsorts 7
The Vic 7
Non-winners:
Flanagan’s Army 8
Kippax Legionnaires 7
Olde Taverners 6
COMMENT(S):
The Vic: Good start.
[They had a bye last week and won by 1 point this week.]
There was no answer that eluded everybody in the FTQL this week. That’s assuming Lofthouse did actually get Kingsmarkham for Inspector Wexford’s location and a 1-point bonus has been misplaced on the scoresheet. But three teams didn’t get Mrs Dale’s Diary (which was only in the Division One quiz) – a healthy sign of the youth of many FTQLers nowadays?

The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 3 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
Lofthouse Lions 9
Kippax Legionnaires 8
Carleton Grangers 7
Flanagan’s Army 6
Golden Lion Dudes 4
Non-winners:
Featherstone Phoenix 7
Olde Tavern Allsorts 7
Upton Bees 7
The Vic 6
The Other Team 5
COMMENTS:
Carleton Grangers: Good game. Great atmosphere.
Featherstone Phoenix: Very good.
Flanagan’s Army: Obscure questions and unbalanced.
The Vic: Unbalanced (in our favour).
Upton Bees: Wobbly balance.
Kippax Legionnaires: No DOUGLAS PICKFORD! But FAIRBANKS.
[The answer to the United Artists question in Round 5 had Douglas Fairbanks misprinted as Douglas Pickford (Mary Pickford is of course another of the answers). At least this probably distracted us from any debate about Senior or Junior (it is in fact Douglas Fairbanks Senior).]
Olde Tavern Allsorts: Too much like ‘University Challenge’, too little like ‘Question of Sport’.
[There was no team round on sport again, albeit there was the odd sport question in the other rounds.]
Golden Lion Dudes: Douglas Pickford?? Da Vinci Q – accept Leonardo.
[The question in Round 5 allowed either ‘Leonardo’ or ‘da Vinci’ (or both, obviously), which is fair enough as he is sometimes known as Leonardo in the way that Michelangelo is regularly known by his first name.]
STATISTICS:
The numbers of questions remaining unanswered (by either team) in rounds 1/2/4/7/9/10 were as follows (in the 5 matches, expressed as A-B):
Division 1:
10-4
5-4
3-2
18-10 (Total)
Division 2:
7-4
3-1
10-5 (Total)
This bears out the above comments which imply that ‘A’ had the rough end of the questions, as all five matches showed an imbalance (though not always a big one) in that direction.
Split by rounds instead of matches, the same unanswered questions break down as:
6-0 (Charities/Non-profit orgs.)
5-6 (Myths & Legends)
4-0 (Sci-fi films)
5-2 (Mountains)
5-2 (Toys and Games)
3-5 (Empires and Emperors)
Answers not got by anyone in any match:
Altdorf (William Tell’s town)
Kong (Mahjong hand with four identical tiles)
Zaragoza (Spanish city founded as a retirement home for Cantabrian War veterans)
It’s also worth noting that (assuming the usual arrangement of Division One/Two questions) only The Other Team got Maya right (the mythology with mud humans and wood humans).

The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 4 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
8: Featherstone Phoenix, Lofthouse Lions
7: Carleton Grangers, Olde Taverners, The Vic
Non-winners:
8: Kippax British Legion, Upton Bees
7: Golden Lion Dudes, Kippax Legionnaires, Olde Tavern Allsorts
COMMENTS:
Olde Taverners: Birds round unbalanced according to our resident ornithologist! Booker Prize-winning novels rather obscure.
Kippax Legionnaires: More birds/architecture rounds, please!
[Booker Prize-winning novels was the answer to the Link Round, which did indeed produce some low scores, with nobody getting 10/10. And see below for some analysis of the Birds round.]
Lofthouse Lions: No more birds!! 😊
The Vic: Good quiz.
Olde Tavern Allsorts: OK, but wasn’t Clout/Substitute 1978?
[The question referred to ‘the song Substitute, which reached Number Two in the UK charts in 1977’. It was indeed 1978 (August) when it reached that position, though is officially classed as a 1977 single as that was when it was released in the band’s home country of South Africa, which is clearly what caused the setter’s minor error here.]
Carleton Grangers: Very good opponents. No sport again?
Golden Lion Dudes: Only duplicate what Mick has put. PS Glad no sport.
Featherstone Phoenix: Good mix of questions.
Kippax British Legion: Very good.
STATISTICS:
In the Birds round, the questions remaining unanswered (by either team) over the 5 matches numbered 6 for ‘A’ and 1 for ‘B’. So there was indeed a notable imbalance, as Olde Taverners (who played ‘A’) suggested. And, although all the questions in that round were answered somewhere on the night, two ‘A’ questions were only answered by one team each:
Snipe (Gallinago gallinago, male making a drumming sound in courtship) (occurred in both quizzes, and answered only by a Div 2 team, Kippax British Legion)
Frigate bird (Largest wingspan in relation to weight, AKA man-o’-war bird or pirate bird) (occurred only in Div 1, and answered only by Olde Tavern Allsorts)

The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 5 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
9: Lofthouse Lions
8: Featherstone Phoenix
7: Carleton Grangers, The Vic
Non-winners:
8: Olde Taverners
7: Golden Lion Dudes, Kippax British Legion
6: Kippax Legionnaires
4: Upton Bees
COMMENTS:
The Netflix round proved a little controversial this week (each show had to be named from three of its major characters)…
The Vic: Good (apart from Netflix) (and we’ve got Netflix).
Upton Bees: A round on a subscription TV channel was a waste of everybody’s time.
Carleton Grangers: Good game – very sporting opponents.
Kippax British Legion: Good, but not sure about Netflix round.
Kippax Legionnaires: We hope your Netflix subscription was worth it!
Featherstone Phoenix: Another good mix – would love a music round.
The Other Team: ’A’ questions did seem a little easier than ‘B’ this week.
[Well, the first round was ‘Musical instruments’ and the link in Round 8 was Brit Pop bands. And, regarding the balance, ‘B’ received 7 unanswered questions but ‘A’ only 6 (with similar figures across the other two Div 2 matches), bearing out the above comment – just!]
Golden Lion Dudes: Good questions (varied).
Lofthouse Lions: Excellent.

The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 6 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
8: Carleton Grangers
7: Upton Bees
Non-winners:
8.5: The Vic
8: Kippax British Legion, Olde Tavern Allsorts
6: Golden Lion Dudes
5: Featherstone Phoenix, Flanagan’s Army
COMMENTS:
Carleton Grangers: Good quiz. Fair questions. Great opponents.
Kippax British Legion: Very good.
Golden Lion Dudes: Varied subjects.
Featherstone Phoenix: Not great for us ☹
[They lost (to The Other Team).]
The Vic: Good set of questions, well balanced and varied.
[The Vic were perhaps a little generous since they as ‘B’ received 6 unanswered questions but their opponents, Olde Taverners, received only 3. That imbalance was less pronounced across the other two Div 1 matches, however.]

The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 12 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
Carleton Grangers 8
Lofthouse Lions 8
Golden Lion Dudes 7
Kippax British Legion 7
Kippax Legionnaires 7
Upton Bees 7
Non-winners:
Olde Taverners 9
Featherstone Phoenix 8
The Vic 7
Flanagan’s Army 6
COMMENTS:
Golden Lion Dudes: Not bad.
Featherstone Phoenix: Good quiz.
Olde Taverners: Evenly balanced questions, right level of difficulty.
Carleton Grangers (v King’s Arms): Good quiz. High standard + good opponents. Thank you.
STATISTICS:
There was one answer not got by anyone in the FTQL (though only Division One had the chance):
Matinee (Film starring John Goodman as a schlock-horror director)
And there was one answer not got by any Division One team, but which King’s Arms in Division Two did get:
Sanyo (Japanese electronics company with a name meaning ‘three oceans’)

The feedback from the scoresheets for the KO CUP RD 1 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
10: Lofthouse Lions
8: Olde Taverners
7: Flanagan’s Army, Kippax Legionnaires, The Other Team
Non-winners:
8: Carleton Grangers, King’s Arms
7: Olde Tavern Allsorts, The Vic
6: Golden Lion Dudes, Kippax British Legion
COMMENTS:
Upton Bees: A good quiz.
Carleton Grangers: V good game. Well done, Bees.
Lofthouse Lions: Love it!!
The Vic: Not our finest hour.
[Lofthouse won 91-54.]
Olde Tavern Allsorts: Horse-racing maybe a bit easy? Edith Cresson a strangely easy Q for end of Rd 1. NZ cities came up in last Knockout Cup Final. Otherwise OK!
[The horse-racing round was 8-8 in the Allsorts’ match against Flanagan’s Army, but didn’t produce the same score in any other match. Edith Cresson was the B4 question, which 5 out of 6 ‘B’ teams got, whereas the corresponding A4 question was only got by one team (Lofthouse, of course!).]
The Other Team: A mixed bag!
Golden Lion Dudes: Wow!
[Perhaps a reaction to their opponents, Olde Taverners, winning 82-50.]
STATISTICS:
All the questions in the verbal team rounds were answered correctly somewhere in the FTQL on the night.
Neil.
